Here, it explicitly goes beyond his physical form as an extension of his being and a sign of his power and control, creating a foreboding sense of palpable dread as he creeps along a door or glides across the cityscape. The landscapes are beautiful and isolated; castles are otherworldly and dangerous; and each shot boasts meticulous composition and staging. It’s a gorgeously detailed film with stunningly rich production design, all contributing to a magnificently oppressive atmosphere as Count Orlok comes to secure his hold over Ellen.

And where Rust travels henceforth is uncertain. Whenever it emerges, audiences will find a work of salutary effect and simple pleasure saturated in morbid curiosity — strange monument, ugly footnote. After nine years, Aaron Taylor-Johnson returns to Marvel superhero fare, but while Kraven the Hunter has potential, it’s a middling origin story. The weaker elements of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 feel unimportant in the wake of an entertaining time that will no doubt thrill audiences of all ages.
